Back pain is a common reason for people to visit their doctor. The majority of Americans will suffer from lower back pain in their lifetime. There are many causes, from acute sprains caused by sports injuries to long-term illnesses.
Eight tips to keep your back healthy and relieve pain:
- Strengthen the core muscles. The lower back supports your upper body. It would help ton the surrounding muscles to keep your spine and relieve pressure on your lower back. Because our core muscles are not used daily, they must be toned with targeted, specific exercises. Spend a few moments each day doing a couple of simple core exercises.
- It would help if you stretched your muscles daily. Tight muscles are the cause of many back problems. Your entire spine and joints are stressed if your back muscles tighten up. Make it a habit to stretch every day for your spine’s health.
- Refrain from sitting with poor posture. When you are sitting, your discs in the lower spine are more loaded than when standing. Remember to stand up occasionally if you have to sit long.
- Walk. Walking can be a safe and effective exercise. You can maintain a healthy body weight by brisk walking outside or at work.
- Lift properly. It’s easy to lift heavy objects in the wrong direction. This can cause muscle spasms and pain. When picking up heavy items, use proper body mechanics and engage your leg muscles instead of your back. If the item’s weight is beyond your ability to lift, ask for help.
- Relieve pressure on the spine by sleeping flat on your stomach. Place a pillow beneath your knees to elevate them slightly. Put a pillow in between your knees if you sleep on your side. This will reduce the pressure on your spine.
- Be careful with your weight. Excess weight can put a strain on your spine. Your spine may become unevenly stressed and tilted as a result of extra weight. Over time, the back can lose its support and develop an unnatural spine curve.
- Stop smoking. Smoking reduces the blood flow to your discs, which cushions your vertebrae. This may lead to faster disc degeneration. Smoking reduces calcium absorption as well as new bone growth. It increases the chance of breaking a bone due to Osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak.
